Gervonta David has recently confirmed that he will be leaving Mayweather Promotions and that he will be a free agent soon after his next fight with Rolly Romero, scheduled to take place this weekend on Saturday night.
Gervonta said when asked about it:
“Yes, sir. It’s about just becoming that man, handling your own responsibility, your own priorities.
“So I feel as though it’s my career, so I feel as though I need to be the one to control my career. And it’s time.”
This has gotten some people excited that he may now finally be involved in fights that the public want to see.
But does it really?
Not necessarily.
If you pay attention to his exact words, the Maryland fighter is heavily implying that he will be the one to take control of his own boxing career. We have seen this with Floyd Mayweather in the past. And he did not immediately select opponents that fans had been craving for. He eventually did, but he arranged them in a way that they contained certain conditions so he would have most of the advantages.
Then again, Gervonta Davis is not Floyd Mayweather. And parting ways from him could just as equally mean that he is now ready to take his skills to the next level by having fights with the likes of Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney.
Let us hope that the second scenario unfolds sometime in the near future.
