WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight titleholder David Morrell Jr 6-0 (5) says he is ready, willing and able to face WBC interim titleholder David ‘El Bandera Roja’ Benavidez 26-0 (23).
Benavidez labelled other boxers in the 168-pound division “bitches” after his third-round stoppage win over David Lemieux 43-5 (36) last weekend, but Morrell was having none of it.
“I ain’t no bitch and you’re going to find out,” Morrell said. “I’m from Cuba and I’m not afraid to fight you. I’ve beaten bigger and better fighters than you. So right after this fight I got coming up, get your ass ready.
“I have business to handle of June 4th against Henderson, a fight I’m taking very seriously. After that, I’m on the hunt for Benavidez’ head.
“There is no bitch in me, after my fight, I’m gonna make you my bitch. No need to talk no more I’m gonna show you better than I can tell you… see you soon BITCH.”
Southpaw Morrell, 24, is scheduled to defend his secondary title against Kalvin ‘Hot Sauce’ Henderson 15-1-1 (11) at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 4.
“This training camp has been special because I was in great shape coming in and I got to work on a lot of new things with my coach Ronnie Shields,” Morrell said.
“I got to spar with some new faces, and I’ll be very sharp going into this fight. My body feels good and I’m healthy. No body aches or injuries, so I’ll be ready to shine.
“Henderson is a very durable fighter who has never been stopped. I’m aiming to be the first person to knock him out. He’s had a lot of time to prepare for this fight, so I know he’ll be coming in great shape. He also has a lot of power, so I must be at my best defensively.
“A victory will set up a major showdown with David Benavidez or any of the top contenders or champions. It’s no secret that I’m coming for Benavidez. I know a great performance on June 4 will lead to some big-time fights against some big-time names.”
Morrell has made a name for himself in Minnesota since making his pro debut at The Amoury in August 2019. Half of his six pro bout have taken place at the same venue.
“Minneapolis is my city here in the United States,” Morrell said. “I’ve made a name for myself in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. I’m ready to set the city on fire at The Armory once again. The fans are incredible and I can’t wait to give them another great night of boxing.”
A bout between Morrell and Benavidez would be welcomed by boxing fans but seems unlikely to take place in the immediate future as rival sanctioning bodies do not allow secondary titleholders to unify their belts.
