Canelo Alvarez warns Gennadiy Golovkin he has improved in the past four years

Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin ahead of their third fight

Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 57-2-2 (39) insists he has improved since the last time he face WBA and IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin 42-1-1 (37) four years ago despite losing his last bout.

The 31-year-old Mexican superstar dipped his toe in the light heavyweight division for the second time in his career in May, when he lost a clear-cut point decision to WBA 175-pound champion Dmitry Bivol 20-0 (11).

That loss aside, he holds the edge of 40-year-old Kazakh Golovkin with a split draw in September 2017 and a majority decision victory a year later.

“I think he’s going to be surprised how much I’ve improved. My resistance, my strength. That will definitely surprise him,” Alvarez said during a press tour this week.

“Coming off the Bivol loss I am much more motivated than before. I always train 100%. I love boxing. That will never go away.

“I feel different though. More motivated. More dangerous. I really want to be in the ring again. Especially with this guy Golovkin. He’s talking a lot of shit. It’s going to be a good fight.”

Alvarez remains one of the most active top-line fighters in boxing. He has fought five times in the past year-and-a-half.

“It’s very important for me to get back,” said Alvarez. “A lot of people lose and take a year, two years to come back. I have a strong mind. I want to keep pushing. I’m in boxing because I want to be one of the best fighters in boxing history. I’m on that line.

“[My body is holding up] with a little trouble, but it’s fine. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to take the time off. But also maybe bring it down a notch and instead of fighting three times a year fight just once.”

Golovkin also admitted that Alvarez had improved since their last encounter.

“I think [that Alvarez is a better fighter since our 2018 rematch]. Yes. Before the first two fights, I said that whoever wins will have an amazing career and will go far, and that’s exactly what happened as a result,” said Golovkin, who is coming off a knockout win over Ryota Mutata 16-3 (13) in Japan in April.

“Canelo looks better since 2018 because his opponents have paled in comparison to me. Champions are champions, of course. Some champions are better than others.”

Alvarez has said this fight is personal for him as certain sections of the media and fans believed he lost his two previous bouts with Golovkin.

“I wasn’t that surprised [that this fight is personal for Alvarez],” Golovkin said. “But on the other hand, if it’s personal to him and his team, you should ask him why exactly.

“In my opinion, I don’t think anything is personal. This is a sport. If he says it was personal, then why was he putting the third fight off for so long and not resolving the situation?

“If you have something against your opponent, you display it during the fight. When the fight is over, you hug each other, you shake hands and you put everything past you.”
