Tyson Fury declares he will destroy “middleweight” Oleksandr Usyk

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury 32-0-1 (23) has delivered a stinging rebuke to WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk 20-0 (13) after the unified champion said he doesn’t want to fight again this year as he waits until his injuries heal.

Usyk outpointed Anthony Joshua 24-3 (22) in their rematch last month to retain his unified championship. After the bout he said the only fight he wanted was against Fury or otherwise he would retire.

“I want the WBC title. It was captured by the gypsies, some kind of king. We don’t know what Tyson has in his head. Everyone knows that this is a very crazy guy. I would really like this fight to happen next year,” Usyk said at a press conference on Friday.

There was some preliminary talk of Usyk facing Fury before the end of the year, but Usyk ruled it out.

“Fighting Tyson Fury in December is impossible,” the 35-year-old Ukrainian southpaw said. “First, I have old injuries. Second, I just don’t want to box in December. I haven’t left the gym for half a year. I want to be with my children and my family. Boxing can wait for a little. Next year I think it will happen.”

England’s Fury, 34, announced he would be hanging up the gloves following his sixth-round knockout victory over mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte 28-3 (19) in April. But the self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ has repeatedly flip-flopped on retirement and to date has not relinquished the WBC belt.

Fury did hand in his Ring magazine title in the week leading up to Usyk-Joshua II, with Usyk claiming the vacant title with his second win over Joshua.

Fury has taunted former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk on social media, repeatedly referring to him as a middleweight, the weight division he boxed in as an amateur.

“7-foot behemoth that will absolutely destroy you,” Fury said. “Usyk, middleweight, you say you want the WBC, well it’s held by the Gypsy King, and it’s held tightly and grasped tight. All roads lead to a 7-foot behemoth that will absolutely destroy you, middleweight. You will get smashed to bits.

“You said you wanted to fight me after you bit the bodybuilder [Anthony Joshua] but now you’re running, hiding, saying you’ve got injuries. You’ve let your mouth go, now let’s see if you can back it up, middleweight.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s December, April, or August next year. The outcome will be the same, I will obliterate you.”

“He wants to fight against me. He wants people to talk about him. He hasn’t retired yet, it’s just a game – ‘I’m leaving boxing, I’m coming back.’ He still wants to earn money,” Usyk said to Sky Sports.

“All the fanciful comments against me, he probably thinks it will touch me. But it won’t. I take it like the crow arguing with the wolf sitting from the tree… the reality is that if the crow was close to the wolf, she would keep silent. Tyson Fury loves to talk – all of that blah blah blah.”
