Jermell Charlo: “Tim Tszyu is a tough fight, but he’s perfect for me”

Undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo 35-1-1 (19) gave Tim Tszyu 22-0 (16) his props for his ninth-round knockout victory over Tony Harrison 29-4-1 (21) but said the WBO number one contender didn’t show him anything he had not seen before.

Texan Charlo, 32, was scheduled to defend his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF world titles against Tszyu on January 28 before a hand injury suffered in sparring forced him to withdraw from the bout in December.

Rather than sit on the sidelines, the 28-year-old Tszyu opeted to take on the only man to defeat Charlo in Harrison.

On Sunday afternoon local time Tszyu dismantled Harrison to stop him four bells before full time at Qudos Arena in his hometown of Sydney, Australia to claim the vacant WBO interim title.

Charlo will now be mandated to defend his four world title belts against Tszyu once his injured left hand is fully healed.

“He was impressive. He did what he had to do at home,” said Charlo on the Showtime broadcast of the fight.

“He was a little flat to me. My movement, my style, my power will make him do completely different things.

“That’s exactly what we’ve seen — come forward, not as fast or a big pace. Strong, of course. Throws hard punches. Don’t we all? But I’m a different animal in there. I’m a different fighter than Tony.

“Tim is next and that’s what we had before the injury. It’s not like I’m not prepared already.

“He doesn’t really show a lot of athleticism to me. When you’ve got skills, and you’ve got styles and you’ve got power all together, you get four belts. He’s going to be a tough fight because he’s coming forward, but I think he’s perfect for my style.

“I know he can’t take my punch, because I just know my punch is different. It just made me want to fight, just get this over with, shut him up, I’ve shut a lot of them up, it’s just another one.

“He’s going to do the same thing. He’s not going to change much.”

After the fight Tszyu praised Harrison, insisting he was ready for Charlo.

“We will always have respect for each other, but tonight I proved I was the better fighter,” Tszyu said.

“The way my career has unfolded has been step by step, all the way to the top. That’s my mentality as a fighter. When I’m presented an opportunity like Charlo, of course I’m going to take that. And when I get an opportunity to face Tony Harrison, of course I’m going to take it.”

Tszyu added that he doesn’t think Charlo holds any fear of him.

“Charlo isn’t scared. We’re fighters, we’re not scared. It’s just part of our mentality. There’s so such thing as being scared,” he said.

“Charlo’s a real angry man, that’s just how he is. He barks a lot.”
