USA Heavyweight Prospect watch: Unbeaten Malik Titus

Malik Titus

It’s fair to say that the American Heavyweight scene is not what it once was. The USA has dominated the division, largely, since its conception and throughout the 20th century.

In the current 21st century, the grip and depth of American Heavyweights dwindled. A few exceptions, like Deontay Wilder but, generally, nowhere near the earlier dominance. I’ve always had a fascination with the division, since first following the sport in the mid-1980s. Have seen some prospects make it and others vanish but it’s fun watching their progress and career.

I’m looking at the current US prospects out there, who may or may not get to the Top.

Malik Titus (8-0, 8 KOs)

First up and hailing out of Baltimore, Maryland is unbeaten Malik Titus. He’s been boxing and at the gym since the age of eleven. He’s from a rough part of the city called Sandtown but his aspiration isn’t to get out of the area, but to give back and help those from the neighbourhood. He plans to have a successful boxing career so that he can give back.

At the age of twelve, he was a regular in the gym, a place he felt safe at compared to the mean streets. Despite living in the projects, Malik avoided the temptations of drugs and stayed out of trouble. His mindset focused on boxing, and it runs in his blood, his father and grandfather were boxers.

The 25-year-old is 6’5 and 260lbs. He’s in shape and athletic. He’s listed as fighting out of the orthodox stance but is a switch-hitter. He’s fluid and looks to use distance to his advantage and a big plus is a powerful right hand. He’s trained by Coach Mack Allison III at Time2Grind Boxing Gym, Northeast Baltimore.

Titus has four 1st round Knockouts, though, in his last fight, he got a spectacular win over the hungry Christopher Arnold, in the sixth round. More learning fights are in the future, which happens with all prospects but the signs, so far, are good.

A professional since September 2021, his first fight was on the road, in Virginia. Where he stopped former amateur opponent, Nathaniel Copeland, in two rounds. The Baltimore native has been kept busy, he had five fights in 2022 and all knockout victories. Two fights are pencilled in at Patapsco Arena, Baltimore, later in April & June.

Baltimore has produced a World Heavyweight Champion in Hasim Rahman (50-9-2, 41 KOs). ‘The Rock’ famously shocked Lennox Lewis, in 2001, to win the IBF & WBC belts and, more, importantly became the lineal champion. P4Per Gervonta Davis is another son of “Charm City” and he’s riding high in the sport.

Malik Titus appears to have the ability to do well and the will to stay focused on the sport. He’s a name to watch out for and time will tell whether he succeeds in reaching the top.
