Will Davis vs Garcia Save Boxing?

Fight fans are waiting with bated breath for April 22nd to come around as Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia will take on one another at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. Although it doesn’t appear to be for any kind of title, that does not seem to matter to many who just want to see the best take on the best at the peak of their careers. And the two fighters are giving the fans what they want. Unlike so many other combatants in recent years that have prioritised loading their wallets over giving what audiences crave, which is the best fight that they could possibly produce by not leaving things until they are past their sell by dates.

But the thing that people have been confident in asserting lately is, is that this fight will save boxing.

But will it?

Listen, this fight has everything we could want. Two boxers with crowd pleasing styles combining records of 51-0 with 45 KO’s. There is sure to be fireworks. And it could go down and be remembered as one of boxing’s greatest modern battles. The jury will be out on that one until fight night arrives, but it isn’t unreasonable to have such expectations. The thing is, boxing has faced so much trouble lately that we are not simply talking about the sport being in minor trouble. It’s in major trouble! We are not just talking about the tangible things that are wrong with boxing. After evidently seeing how much distrust the fans have of it show that it is going to take some time. And what it needs to do is consistently give us what we want to see.

And that is the key word here. Consistency!

Let’s also bear in mind that all of the other problems with boxing will still remain even if we begin to see the best fighting the best. Those include having too many so called world championship  titles, Pay Per View’s  for subpar quality cards and boxers failing doping tests. And that’s only a few things that I have listed there. But hey, noticing that consistency in getting the best available quality fights would be a huge and positive beginning.

But will that beginning start with Davis vs Garcia?

We shall see.
