Al Bernstein has called some of the biggest fights in boxing and he rates this weekend’s undisputed welterweight world title clash between WBC, WBA and IBF champion Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr 28-0 (22) and WBO counterpart Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford 39-0 (30) amongst the best of the them.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, who has announced over 150 pay-per-view telecasts including Marvin Hagler vs Tommy Hearns and Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao, says the Spence vs Crawford bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday night is “near the top of the list”.

“Boxing often has some big match that the mainstream sports media is banging the drum for and if the fight doesn’t get made it is held up as a sign boxing can’t make big matches,” Bernstein explained.

“This was one of those fights—but now it’s not because it is happening on July 29. It features two fighters who are fighting at the top of their game in what seems to me to be a dead even match-up.”

For years the fight looked like it would not happen. Just last year fight fans had their hopes dashed when negotiations for the bout fell apart. But in a genius move, the two protagonists got in direct contact to work out the finer details to get the fight over the line.

There is a lot on the line for both boxers. Not only will the winner be crowned the undisputed world champion at 147-pounds, they will also collect the prestigious Ring Magazine championship and be boosted to number one in many reputable pound-for-pound lists.

But more than anything, the bout is about legacy.

“In the dictionary next to the phrase boxer-puncher you will see Terrance Crawford’s photo,” Bernstein said. “He embodies that title. He has great skills from both the right handed and left-hand stances. He has good movement and very good power especially as a counter puncher.

“Errol Spence is a relentless attacker who may be one of the best body punchers in the sport. He has every punch in his arsenal and he is hard to deter in the ring. In this fight Crawford wants to control the geography of the ring and keep distance as much as possible. He hopes to catch Spence coming forward with a powerful counter.

“Spence would like to be inside where his body work can make a difference. I think a key in this fight is how well Spence can use his jab to work his way inside.

“There are so many scenarios that are plausible for this fight. It could be tactical in spots and a firefight in others. At the end of the day it is a true 50-50 match and that’s one of the reasons so many are anxiously awaiting July 29th.”
