Deontay Wilder joins chorus of experts tipping Jermell Charlo win

Jermell Charlo

The bookmakers are expecting Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 59-2-2 (39) to retain his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF super middleweight titles when he defends his belts against undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell ‘Iron Man’ Charlo 35-1-1 (19) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

But as the fight inches closer, more and more experts are emerging to suggest an upset could very well be on the cards.

This week International Boxing Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins said Charlo has a very real chance of victory if he boxes a disciplined fight.

“His style is totally different from the styles that Canelo has fought,” Hopkins said to FightHype. “[Charlo is] younger, more determined to prove that Canelo’s time has been great, but it’s up.

“I just believe that Canelo will have to get him out of there early. The later the fight goes, the more Canelo will start showing not only his age, but he’ll start showing the success he’s been enjoying for so long is starting to look different.

“Canelo elevates Charlo. I just think he has the skills and if he maintains that mentality, it can be really a nightmare for Canelo based on styles.”

Famed trainer Freddie Roach went one further, saying Charlo would win the fight definitively by knockout.

“I love the attitude that Charlo brings into the ring,” Roach said. “He’s mean and defiant, and better yet, he backs that attitude up with his talent. He cannot be intimidated. He has a great chin and doesn’t get fazed by getting hit. Charlo is downright vicious inside the ring.

“And while both men can fight, I think Charlo will have too much firepower for Canelo to handle, especially at the higher weight.

“Canelo needs to stay away from Charlo’s left hook. The question is, can Canelo stay away from Charlo’s left hook? I don’t think he can, which is why I’m picking Charlo by stoppage. I can’t wait for this one.”

Now former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has joined their ranks, tipping Charlo to surprise fans and pundits alike.

“I’ve got high confidence in Charlo, it’s going to be a good one though,” Wilder said to K.O. Artist Sports. “I got confidence in both of them though, no matter how shady that sounds. Both of them have different techniques and power when it comes to the boxing game, but I think that it’s going to be a great fight overall.

“If I was leaning, I’d lean a little bit more towards Charlo. They’ve been wanting this so bad, a lot of people have been wanting Canelo so bad, this is the moment in time for them to prove themselves now that they have him.

“With that being said, I think that Charlo is going to really grind out and want this because if he does win, this is going to be a defining moment in his career, being able to beat someone like Canelo.”
