Breaking down Froch vs Groves II

To the suspense of thousands, Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn finally announced that Wembley stadium will be host to the rematch that England has been waiting for, when IBF and WBA super-middleweight champion Carl Froch wll face George Groves on May 31st. Tickets are set to be released on Monday after the two fighter’s initial press conference where both fighters will highly likely start their usual first dose of trash talking. Opinions on who will win are split right down the middle, usually depending on who supports who, but this article will take an unbiased route in order to dissect each fighter’s attributes to find a winner.

Why Journeymen fighters are boxing’s blood line

While the casual boxing fan will quite often express their interest only in the main event of a show card, the so called “journeyman” will always have the support of some of the biggest names in the sport, most notably the promoters of a show. So many forget how important, perhaps even necessary, these fighters are to boxing, especially when comes the time a scheduled opponent pulls out of a fight at short notice. Quite often, a promoter will call upon a journeyman fighter at short notice to fill in an opponent’s place, saving an undercard or, although more rarely, a main attraction. It is unfortunate that these guys receive so little respect for what they do as it is often said that they are boxing’s life line. Without them, the value of a night’s worth of fights is decreased. Another much less talked about aspect is that journeymen often give a rising star fighter the necessary experience he needs. While journeymen fighters do not often hear the MC shout their names in victory or have their hand held high to a raucous crowd, they collect a wealth of experience, something that is often passed on to opponents of a superior calibre.

Lennox Lewis vs Riddick Bowe, What If?

This fight should have happened. At one point they were the two best heavyweights in the world. The public salivated for the prospect of these two meeting to settle who was # 1. Lennox Lewis wanted it. Riddick Bowe did not, thus this “Super Bout” never materialized.

What if Bowe and Lewis did meet ? This would have taken place after Riddick beat Evander Holyfield and Lewis had destroyed Razor Ruddock. It may go something like this. The battle begins with the two giants trading jabs. Bowe’s is quicker but the Lewis jab carries more power. When they do mix on the inside Bowe seems to have an early advantage. By the third round Bowe’s trainer Eddie Futch instructs Riddick to pick up the pace. He obliged by landing some flashy combinations to the head of Lewis. Bowe has also landed some nice uppercuts and appears to be getting off faster then Lennox.

Plenty of options still left for Froch

Reigning IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch is at the peak of his career right now and is at the stage where he will want to cash in on the biggest fights he can get before hanging up his gloves for good. He is fighting George Groves on November 23rd, and providing that the Nottingham fighter wins convincingly and without controversy, the search for more big fights will continue. But who is left? Actually, there are surprisingly still a number of worthy fights as I will tell.
