Blood Sport Time Redux

On May 7, 2005, Jose Luis Castillo and the late Diego Corrales engaged in one of the most savage and thrilling fights ever waged inside a boxing ring. The stoppage by Diego remains one of the most dramatic ring turnarounds in history, perhaps matched only by Jorge Castro’s stoppage of John David Jackson via La mano de Dios (The hand of God) in 1996.

Castillo (66-12-1), after knocking out Corrales in their rematch five months later, moved up to light welterweight and was promptly waxed by Ricky Hatton in 2007. After quitting on his stool against Alfonso Gomez in 2010, the proud and once feared Castillo announced his retirement, but like most boxers who announce a retirement on the spot and/or without exploring other options, this one didn’t last long.

Why Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti’s legacies are immortal in boxing

It has not happened just once that I have seen the question of whether Arturo Gatti is a legend being raised. Typically, people judge fighters legacies based on the quality of their opposition and their accomplishments. But what about those that could not quite compete at the elite level? Can fighters such as Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti be considered as modern legends?

My Ten Favourite Fights

At the signal, unleash hell. — Russell Crowe from the movie “Gladiator”

Over the years, I have witnessed literally thousands of fights and to name my top ten will do injustice to many others and I regret that. Still, I’ll give it a go and list them in order of preference. Rightly or wrongly and in order to decrease the universe, I had to see them live or when they were first televised (no tapes, YouTube’s, and/or videos).
