Crossing the promotional divide

The landscape of boxing in the U.K. has changed dramatically over the past two years.  At the start of 2012 the promotional side of the game was dominated, as it had been for many years, by Frank Warren.  Although he has used various names for his promotional organisations, for the purposes of this piece I shall refer to them all in his name.  At that time, Frank had taken the massive step of being a huge part in the inauguration of a television channel solely dedicated to boxing, BoxNation.  His fledgling channel had already televised several of his shows by then.

At the same time though, we also had other promoters who were doing rather well, namely Frank Maloney, Hatton Promotions, run by the eponymous Ricky and the resurgent Matchroom Sport Boxing, headed up by newcomer Eddie Hearn.  All of these promotional outfits had contracts with Sky Sports, who rotated their weekly two hour boxing show between these promoters.  Also on the scene was Hennessy Sport, run by Mick Hennessy, who had fairly recently been given a contract by terrestrial television’s Channel 5.

Breaking down Froch vs Groves II

To the suspense of thousands, Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn finally announced that Wembley stadium will be host to the rematch that England has been waiting for, when IBF and WBA super-middleweight champion Carl Froch wll face George Groves on May 31st. Tickets are set to be released on Monday after the two fighter’s initial press conference where both fighters will highly likely start their usual first dose of trash talking. Opinions on who will win are split right down the middle, usually depending on who supports who, but this article will take an unbiased route in order to dissect each fighter’s attributes to find a winner.
