Canelo crushes Kirkland and heads towards Super fights

On Saturday night Saul “Canelo” Alvarez showcased what he does best; beat up stationary fighters. James Kirkland had little chance against the 24-year-old Mexican superstar, albeit it was not because of lack of effort or heart. Most fighters would not have survived Canelo’s onslaught in round one; ripping hard shots both to the body and head of James Kirkland, with both hands – Canelo established it was his ring and his night.

Canelo vs Kirkland a hit with TV audience

After an electrifying night at Minute Maid Park in Houston where more than 31,000 fans gathered to watch live on May 9, Canelo vs. Kirkland brought in a stunning number of viewers on HBO World Championship Boxing (WCB) with an average viewership of 2,146,000 for the live, first-time airing on HBO and peaked at 2,296,000 viewers.

Watch: Canelo mauls Kirkland in third-round stoppage win

At the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1 32 KO’s) overcame James Kirkland’s rabid aggression to down and defeat the “Mandingo Warrior” in three rounds.

Kirkland came out fighting. The once-beaten 154-lber was looking to land a fight-changing left hand power shot from the very beginning. At that, he wouldn’t find much success. Canelo struck first — landing a crisp straight-right which buckled the feet of Kirkland and sent him to the canvas. For the second half of the opening round, Alvarez dealt real damage and nearly finished the bout, but was stopped by the bell.

Knockout or Decision? Media Experts Give Their Picks for Canelo vs. Kirkland

Media experts are making their predictions for how the showdown between heavy hitters Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) will end on May 9 at Houston’s Minute Maid Park. Given the power of both fighters, all agree that this fight will be explosive in the ring and action-packed from start to finish. The experts we polled overwhelmingly agree: this fight will end when someone gets knocked out.

Saul Canelo Alvarez fights for ‘The Torch’

A lot has been said about last week’s Superfight. Regardless of what your opinion was of Floyd Mayweather’s unanimous decision victory over Manny Pacquiao, one factor can hardly be disputed; both fighters are at the end of their careers.

The reality that boxing’s two major cash cows, since the retirement of Oscar De La Hoya, are at the end of their rope raises a major question: Who will carry the torch, once they are gone?

Canelomania in Houston

Cinco De Mayo unleashed “Canelomania” as Canelo Alvarez and James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland arrived in Houston on the celebrated holiday to kickoff fight week for their highly anticipated clash on May 9 at Minute Maid Park and live on HBO World Championship Boxing ®.  The fighters greeted Houston fans at a special Cinco De Mayo Fan Fiesta hosted by Corona and HEB and then sped off to attend the ceremonial coin toss for the Houston Dynamo vs. San Jose Earthquakes game along with Oscar De La Hoya, President and Founder of Golden Boy Promotions.
