Boxing Insight: Mayweather vs Maidana 2

The boxing rematch between the Pound For Pound best Floyd Mayweather Jr. (36-0) and Argentine Marcos Rene Maidana (35-4) was a twelve round dissertation on why the fight itself was unnecessary.  It was merely a continuation of a test that the American had long figured out a solution to and was victorious despite the cramming efforts towards the second half.  The first bout was clearly won in spite the motley of dirty tactics blatantly employed- the low blows, throwing off balance, pushing through the ropes, the rabbit punches; having fought on and winning convincingly with a badgering wound suffered from a headbutt.  Yet above all these things it is the Mayweather clinching that has gotten the most attention.

Floyd Mayweather: Loathing Without Fear in Las Vegas

I woke to watch this morning’s Mayweather v Maidana title bout with the intention of producing a bog standard write-up of the action.  I left social media alone during the fight before scrolling through reams of tweets immediately after.  The vast majority of people I follow are boxing writers, analysts or commentators of varying merit and reputation who, once all of their great minds are combined, generally provide a relatively balanced view of a fight.  Not so with Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Almost to a tweet, it is possible to determine who is for and who is against from the first 140 characters or less.  The love or hate can manifest itself in a between-the-lines intonation or an in-your-face bias, but personal feelings of the man appear almost impossible to hide.  And for those in any doubt, the lovers are few and far between.

Only three fights left for Floyd Mayweather Jr

Superstar Floyd Mayweather has admitted that his bout with Marcos Maidana this weekend will be one of his last.

The boxing icon faces off against the hard-hitting Maidana for a second time in succession, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this Saturday night, live on BoxNation, and has declared that he will be hanging up his gloves in 2015.
