The Return of The Golden Boy: Shocking Yes, Surprising No

True fighters always believe there is one more fight left in them. No matter how much their physical body disagrees, the internal urge to go one more round is ever present. It never leaves. It is the intangible force that tells them when going into the final round undoubtedly losing on the cards to get up from the stool and touch gloves because there is still a chance for the knockout. However, the same trusted ally that propels a fighter through their prime can become an inevitable enemy when they reach their sunset. An enemy that lies and tells a hall of fame boxer to leave the safety of posterity and return to the lions den without warning of the danger inside. So whenever Oscar De La Hoya recently stirred social sports media by mentioning a potential return to the ring, it was somewhat shocking but by no means surprising.

Promoters dominating the news – a sign of the times or something that needs to be nipped in the bud?

Boxing in the headlines sure has changed over the recent years. One may say that  the innovative nature of the internet permits more news to reach an audience faster and more wider than ever. True. But what good is it truly for boxing fans when the men in suits want in on a piece of the action and seem like they want to take centre stage by disclosing the going on’s of the business side of boxing? It may fire up online debates but recently it has felt like that the sport is more about the promoters and less about the people who give every fibre of their being in the ring, both in the gym and outside.
