What We Learned From This Past Week in Boxing (Sept. 30 – Oct. 7)

In looking at the boxing landscape this past week, I was pretty excited. While sure, it’s tempting to start focusing on the Timothy Bradley – Juan Manuel Marquez fight coming up on October 12. It’s a fight that I’m really looking forward to (and we will go into a full fight preview on this week’s episode of the Pound 4 Pound Boxing Report Podcast/Show later on this week). However, even as I look forward to that bout, there were some interesting bouts that happened this week.

Terrible Tim Witherspoon previews Wladimir Klitschko vs Alexander Povetkin

For the first time in ring history, two Olympic super-heavyweight gold medallists collide for the world heavyweight championship tomorrow evening when Wladimir Klitschko defends his WBA Super, WBO, IBF and IBO belts against WBA ‘regular’ champion Alexander Povetkin at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium. Alexander Povetkin vs Wladimir Klitschko: Will there be more fireworks inside or outside the ring

Dereck Chisora, fresh off his TKO victory in round five against Germanys’ Edmund Gerber, plans to travel to Moscow, Russia. He travels not to fight or to watch from ringside but to be part of Team Povetkin – Dereck will inspect Wladimir Klitschko’s hand-wrapping in an attempt to play mind games and unsettle the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO champion.

Chisora met Wladimir’s brother Vitali Klitschko in February last year and went on to lose a unanimous decision in Munich, Germany. But it was the incidents leading up to the fight that caused a stir between the camps, making Chisora’s hand-wrapping role even more interesting.

Boxers that know more than boxing

It is well known that many fighters have a past where they have had to fight for their place in the world, and not in the most kindly of ways. Manny Pacquiao was forced to drop out of school as his funds were so bad that he was in poverty, like so many other Filipinos of today’s world. Pacquiao was so poor that there were days when he was unable to eat as he and his family could not afford to buy food and was forced to sell odd bits on the streets.

Roberto Duran was another who had a childhood that had similarities to Pacquiao’s. He found himself on the streets often, stealing whatever food items he could to feed his starving body, so it is no surprise that people, maybe unfairly, class boxers as people who are deeply uneducated beings that know nothing except to engage in bloody combat.
