Former IBF featherweight Billy ‘The Kid’ Dib 47-6 (27) has his sights set on the big names at lightweight.
The 36-year-old Australian veteran will take on rising star and countryman Jacob ‘The Flamingo’ Ng 15-0 (11) at The Star Gold Coast in Broadbeach, Queensland tonight.
It will be his third fight since being stopped in four rounds by Amir Khan in a welterweight bout in Saudi Arabia two-and-a-half years ago.
Dib says the world-rated Ng doesn’t present too much of a challenge when compared to his extensive experience.
“I don’t think Jacob Ng brings anything to the ring that will give me problems,” Dib told Fightnews. “I have fought tall guys in the past Zolani Marali and Davey Browne as professionals and Ryan Langham in the amateurs. I had nothing but success with tall fighters.
“I feel that Jacob doesn’t use his attributes. He has got a long reach and good height but he doesn’t use them as he is always caught up in a brawl. I am going to make it hard for him by boxing on the outside and boxing clever.
“At the press conference yesterday Jacob was out of his depth. I have seen the best in press conferences including Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins and I just follow suit.
“Jacob was completely rattled and had no idea. He looked really nervous. This is a big occasion for him. He is the star. He is the favorite. The pressure is all on him. I know he is young and hungry but he is just a kid.
“I have been in there with some of the best fighters in the world. My experience will come through on fight night. I am going to box an absolute clinic. I cannot see Ng lasting ten rounds.
“Angelo DiCarlo has done a wonderful job in building up Jacob Ng but in the fifteen fights he has had, he hasn’t faced anyone like Billy Dib.
“After I beat Ng I am going to put myself in the running in the lightweight division with fights against Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomanchenko, and Gervonta Davis. I want to put myself in the mix with those guys which will put me in a position to get a shot at George Kambosos.
“George is the kingpin of the division. I sparred George many years ago when he was an amateur and I was world champion. He was talented and had good speed. George was a young hungry lion – an up-and-comer. It was four or five good rounds. It was good work.
“The fight with Jacob Ng paves the way for an all Australian showdown between me and George. He keeps saying he wants a big stadium fight. There is no better way to do it than Billy Dib vs George Kambosos.”
