Edgar Berlanga Already Showing Signs That He Does Not Have What It Takes To Reach The Top?

Edgar Berlanga recently scored a 10 round decision over Roamer Alexis Angulo this past weekend at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City – but not before attempting to take a bite out of the shoulder of his opponent!

The fight was a pretty scrappy affair, with both fighters tying one another up frequently. That frustrated Berlanga over the course of the rounds. And in the 7th, he went in to munch on Angulo’s left shoulder. The former world title challenger seemed to know what his opponent was trying to do after he was seen leaning away from Berlanga. Fortunately, there were no further tries by Berlanga in the lead up to the final bell.

But it makes me wonder if Edgar now has the discipline and the ring intelligence to keep his cool instead of becoming flustered in order to reach the top as one of the world’s best super-middleweight boxers. Almost imitating the infamous biting incident when  Mike Tyson chomped on Evander Holyfield’s ear in their 1997 rematch, Berlanga will need to work on containing himself when the going gets tough. As prospects soon realise, they cannot knock out everybody. And boxing  is more mental than physical although one could be forgiven for thinking otherwise considering the hard punishment that they inflict on one another in the squared circle.

Still only with a record of 20 wins and 16 KO’s, the Brooklyn born boxer still has a lot to learn. And it is not a good sign if he is already losing his cool at this early stage of his career. Going the distance four times in a row must be surely frustrating. But he could also see that as a positive in that going longer can mean learning new things. Fighters do not always learn anything when they quickly knock out opponents.

Edgar has a lot of talent, so it is hoped that he does not let all of that go to waste.
