When anticipation disappoints: Boxing’s most notable disqualifications

Outside of a fight being cancelled or a fighter getting cut during a fight, there is nothing more frustrating than when a referee calls for a boxer to be disqualified from a bout due to their antics. Last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Brandon Rios comeback Argentinian opponent Diego Chaves was disqualified after being warned several times for unsportsmanlike conduct in the tenth round. Rios himself was deducted a point in the fifth for handling Chaves to the canvas. Other fouls in the fight included rubbing the glove against the face, excessive clinching and butting, continuing a disappointing run of bad fortune for Rios, who was also caught after his fight with Manny Pacquiao for using a banned performance enhancer.
The history of the sport consists of some anticipated and memorable fights concluding with disqualifications. This is what is going to be analyzed today.

The Greatest Boxing Conference Call Ever as Foreman, Leonard, Duran, Arum, Bradley and Barrera give their opinions

BOB ARUM:  Welcome to the new global age, where fights take place around the world and promotions kick in as if we were still in Las Vegas.  On Thursday and Friday we will have Radio Row broadcasting live from the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium inside The Palazzo Las Vegas resort.  Thirteen national and regional radio shows are participating and we’ll have a whole host of great fighters from the past – guys who made this sport what it is today and as popular as it is today.  George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Ray Mancini, Marco Antonio Barrera; and the stars of today — Tim Bradley and Mike Alvarado — in-person being interviewed on their views on Pacquiao vs. Rios and talking about their experiences fighting outside their own countries.  The world is becoming a very, very small place.  This event in Macao is making a huge impact in Asia and around the world.  I thank all of the participants on today’s call,  A lot of them have fought abroad throughout their career and you can ask them about their experience fighting in multiple time zones from where they trained.

Tim, what can Brandon Rios expect from Manny when he gets in the ring?

Boxers that know more than boxing

It is well known that many fighters have a past where they have had to fight for their place in the world, and not in the most kindly of ways. Manny Pacquiao was forced to drop out of school as his funds were so bad that he was in poverty, like so many other Filipinos of today’s world. Pacquiao was so poor that there were days when he was unable to eat as he and his family could not afford to buy food and was forced to sell odd bits on the streets.

Roberto Duran was another who had a childhood that had similarities to Pacquiao’s. He found himself on the streets often, stealing whatever food items he could to feed his starving body, so it is no surprise that people, maybe unfairly, class boxers as people who are deeply uneducated beings that know nothing except to engage in bloody combat.
