Carl Froch has two weeks to decide on next opponent; two names in the mix

Unified Super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has just two weeks left to decide on his next foe, with two men left in the mix.

Fans have been clamouring for a rematch with George Groves, following a very controversial fight last year. Groves, ahead on all scorecards was stopped, prematurely many felt, in the ninth round.

The younger Groves had out fought the veteran champion in every exchange, even dropping the Nottingham brawler in the first round of a pulsating encounter. Groves has voiced his opinion of Froch very loudly on Twitter as he looks for the rematch, with Froch seemingly unwilling to fight the Londoner again.

The other man who is in the mix for a super fight with Froch is former middleweight king Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

It is believed that the Chavez fight is the more appealing fight to Froch, as it would mean a mega show on the Las Vegas strip.

If Froch is looking for a major pay day, then the way to go is the Groves rematch, which has the potential to be Britain’s biggest ever fight, with promoter Eddie Hearn having held talks with some major venues, with Wembley Stadium even mused as a possible venue, showing that the fight has some major appeal to the masses, not just the hardcore boxing fan.

Hearn believes however that if a fight between the two Brit’s isn’t agreed by the end of January then it will be too difficult to make.

“The Groves fight is the biggest financially, but I don’t think Carl feels he needs it. The public wants it but as far as he’s concerned he has beaten Groves,” Hearn said.

“I’ll put the options on the table and the fighter generally chooses the fight which is the biggest financially. I think deep down, Carl will want to do a job on George Groves before he retires because he doesn’t like him at all. The animosity is genuine.

“We’re already talking to venues about doing it at the end of May before the World Cup, but if it drags on in the negotiation process, George will look at other options.”

Styles make fights, and if Froch wants to remain champion, the easier option of the two would be a fight with Chavez. The Mexican has a style similar to Frochs’ whereas Groves is all wrong for Carl, and I believe he would do a number on Froch if they were to rematch.

Personally I want to see the Groves-Froch rematch. It would be huge for British boxing and a defining night in both boxers careers. Hopefully we see them both in the ring sooner rather than later.
