Devon Alexander does “Great” against Juan Urango

In a Super Lightweight Unification clash WBC champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) retained his title and captured the IBF title as he knocked out IBF champion Juan Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) in round eight at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT in the main event shown on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.

In a close and competitive fight through most of the bout Urango landed the more solid shots while Devon built up a steady lead using his jab and movement. By the 6th round; I had Devon winning the 1st five rounds. Urango made a concerted effort to win the 6th and start changing the fight in his favour, indeed Urango had plenty of success in the 6th and 7th rounds.

It was Alexander who landed the telling blows from a right uppercut in the eighth to send Urango to the canvas early in the round. Urango made it to his feet but didn’t last much longer, as a flurry from Alexander sent Urango back to the canvas for the final time. Referee Benji Estedes Jnr called a halt to the fight at 1:12 of the 8th.

Alexander said after the bout, “His punches did not hurt at all. I was surprised by that. Speed kills everything and that’s what I have.”
