10 Rounds with Alejandro Perez

Fresh off his upset win over hot prospect Art Hovannessyan, Alejandro “El Alacran” Perez headlines Saturday’s Unimas televised Solo Boxeo Tecate card, presented by Top Rank, Art of Boxing, and Bash Boxing. Before stepping into the ring for 10 Rounds of action, Perez sat down with Hollywood Fight News to discuss his upcoming match in 10 quick rounds of Q and A.

Round 1:

HFN: How did you start boxing, and how old were you?

Perez: I was 9 years old. My father was a boxer in Mexico, but didn’t ever have a good trainer or manager, so he didn’t stay with it. My brother was a pro fighter, too, but retired after 9 pro fights.
Round 2:

HFN: Where are you from?

Perez: I was born in Michocan, Mexico, but when I was 7, we moved to Watsonville, CA, and then to Salinas two years later.

Round 3:

HFN: What was your amateur record?

Perez: I was 33-10 I think. I won the Silver Gloves locally, and had the opportunity to go to the Junior Olympics in Michigan

Round 4:

HFN: Who was the best fighter you have fought as a pro?

Perez: Probably Magdaleno. He’s a slick boxer. I dropped him in the first round, but I let him recuperate. It’s true what they say, though… you learn so much more from your losses than your wins.

Round 5:

HFN: You recently made the move to train down here in L.A. at Wild Card. Who is your trainer now?

Perez: It’s still Hector Valladarez… He’s been my trainer all my life. He made the move down with me.

Round 6:

HFN: Are you more comfortable now at Junior Lightweight? Most of your fights were at Junior Featherweight?

Perez: Yes, I couldn’t make 122 lbs anymore, and I only had one fight at 126lbs, when I fought Derrick Wilson. We moved up to 130 to take the fight with Art. I knew him. We had sparred like 80 rounds together, but I am much more comfortable at this weight.

Round 7:

HFN: Could you still make 126lbs?

Perez: I could if I needed to, but we’re staying at 130 for now.

Round 8:

HFN: You mentioned sparring… who has been helping you lately.

Perez: David Clark has been giving me great sparring for this fight, and his power has definitely increased.

Round 9:

HFN: How would you describe your style to those who haven’t seen you?

Perez: I’m known as a fighter who likes to go Toe to Toe. I am able to box as well, but I like to give the fans what they love to see.

Round 10:

HFN: If all goes well, what do you want next?

Perez: I’m a fighter… I want to beat whoever they put in front of me.
