Virgil Hunter – Khan announce opponent soon; fans will be happy but not Broner

In speaking to Sky Sports News Khan’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, revealed that his charge will announce his next opponent very soon, possibly within the following few days, but has ruled out the possibility of it being Adrian Broner.

Khan and Broner have traded blows on Twitter for well over a week with each attack strengthening the chances of a meeting in the ring on the Mayweather-Maidana undercard.

Mayweather had personally endorsed the fight to serve as chief support of his Cinco de Mayo boxing event, suggesting further that the clash should be contested at a catch-weight of 144ibs and presenting Khan with the incentive of promising him a fight should he triumph.

Khan has been very vocal regarding his desire to face Broner; he has openly mocked Broner’s performance against Maidana and stated confidently that he would knock him out. He was left bitterly disappointed at seeing the fight against Mayweather fall through and, although saying that Mayweather was ‘full of shit’ for suggesting that he would fight him if beating Broner, it seemed that he had still relished the test.

Broner had also appeared to want the fight by posting on Instagram numerous manufactured posters of him and Khan face-to-face and asking the fans if it was the fight they wanted. However Khan has undermined Broner’s interest in making a fight happen via a series of Tweets posted on March 4th, disclosing how a call was made to Broner’s team but that they don’t want the fight. Khan revealed that he is due to make an announcement soon and that his opponent is more credible than both Broner and Brook, the latter seen widely by British fight fans as Khan’s compatriotic rival.

Hunter expects people to be happy with the choice of opponent and said that Khan is expected to fight in around eight to ten weeks. He praised the improvements that Khan has demonstrated in the gym since moving up to welterweight and is confident that this will be evident in his next fight. On speaking about Mayweather, Hunter said that the Maidana clash is the ‘same fight’ with the choice of opponent having ‘a puncher’s chance’, but added that Mayweather-Khan will definitely happen and that his charge ‘will settle the score’.

Another name that has been recently mentioned alongside Khan’s is that of Luis Collazo. Since the Puerto Rican boxer called him out there has been much support and enthusiasm for the fight to be made by fans. The WBA international welterweight champion feels that after his second round knock out victory over Victor Ortiz in January he should be held in higher regard and had hoped to land the Mayweather fight himself. He seems absolutely confident that he would finish Khan within the distance but added that the fight makes sense for both boxers as the winner could progress to meet the pound-for-pound king.
