Ben Doughty Interviews George Hillyard Ahead Of August 2nd Clash With Tommy Tolan

Tip TV presenter and well known boxing pundit Ben Doughty interviewed Middleweight prospect George ‘Hit Hard’ Hillyard, ahead of his highly anticipated clash with Ireland’s Tommy ‘The Tiger’ Tolan, which will be the main support bout for the Baz Rehman sponsored MBC International title clash with Jiri Svacina, on the Shyam Batra SSE Promoted CALL OF DUTY event at York Hall on Saturday 2nd August.

George, who returned to the sport in March following a four year sabbatical from the sport, was an outstanding amateur, which in turn led him to being signed by Barry Hearn to his Matchroom Sport promotional outfit until retiring from the sport in 2010, in order to devote his time to his newly born son Oscar, who was born partially blind.

On his return to the sport he loves so much George faced Kirill Psonko at York Hall. George put in a seriously first class performance, winning the first five rounds comfortably, then in the dying moments of the sixth the unbelievable happened, Kirill caught him with a peach of a shot, sending George to the canvas.

George recovered before the count ended, but the instant the bout restarted Kirill started an almighty assault, so much so that referee Ken Curtis had no option but to stop the bout with just five seconds left on the clock.

As such, without doubt this is a make or break fight for George, something it seems he is fully aware of, as he made clear when he spoke.

“It was my fault, I struggled with the weight, I did the weight wrong, I won every round and then with about ten seconds to go, I’m devastated, I took a right hand and it sent me down, it was horrible, my heart was broken that day for sure,

I was more disappointed for the fans that came out to see me, that’s what hurt the most, I’d let the fans down.

Let me put it this way, you can see how trim I am, four and half, five stone I’ve lost, have you ever known George Hillyard two weeks ahead of a fight be on the weight, it’s never happened, but this time it has happened.”
