Sheep Chasing Smith A Real Life Rocky

Cornwall farmer Wes Smith is hoping for a real life ‘Rocky’ story ahead of his professional debut at Plymouth Guildhall next weekend.

The talented former amateur combines training with his full-time job on his father’s farm and admits chasing sheep – rather than chickens – is ideal cardio work in the lead-up to the October 29th ‘Fright Night’ show, sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Plymouth.

Smith, from Launceston, who plans to compete at welterweight, told uko-boxing.com: “I’m a farmer by trade, working on my dad’s farm. It works out well because I can fit my training in around my job.

“Plus, it’s hard work on the farm so it keeps me fit in itself, running round after the sheep and hauling things about. Rocky did it with chickens but ours is a beef and lamb farm so it’s sheep for me.

“I’m excited for my debut more than anything. It’s an exciting time for boxing in the West Country and I’m buzzing to be a part of it.

“I got frustrated with the amateur game due to all the pull-outs and having to be the away fighter a lot of the time.

“It’s the right time to go into the pros.”

A host of professional Plymouth pugilists feature at the Guildhall this coming Saturday, 29th October. The show is sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Plymouth, who will host the weigh-in 24 hours before – at 5.00pm on Friday –  and the Official Aftershow.

At the top of the bill, Guernsey middleweight, Tom Duff, will make the short hop over the Channel once again to challenge Plymouth’s Cristian Hoskin-Gomez for the British Challenge Middleweight Title.

Jack Bellingham, Des ‘The Destroyer’ Newton, Faheem Khan and Marcus Hodgson also feature.

Standard tickets for Fight Night are £30 and are available by calling: 07506 108 232. VIP have now SOLD OUT. Doors open at 6:30pm with boxing commencing at 7:30pm at Plymouth Guildhall, Armada Way, Plymouth, PL1 2AA. A handful of tickets will be available to purchase on the door.
