Dillian Whyte does Lucas Browne a £50k favour

Dillian Whyte

Heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte 23-1 (17) has revealed he waived an extra £50k from Lucas Browne 25-1 (22) after the Australian breached a clause in their fight contract.

Whyte stopped Browne in six one-sided rounds at the O2 Arena in London on March 24, knocking him out cold with a left hook. The fight was waived without a count once Browne hit the canvas. He regained consciousness and was given oxygen before leaving the ring on a stretcher.

After a recent session on the pads at his Brixton gym with retired former champion Nigel Benn, the two got to talking about some of the details of the Browne fight.

And Whyte revealed that there was a clause in the contract to ensure both boxers participated in a post-fight drug test. The clause called for both boxers to submit to the test prior to leaving the arena – something Browne failed to do due to the nature of the fight ending.

“In the contract, Lucas Browne asked for a clause: anyone who leaves the venue without getting drug-tested pays 50 grand. He got knocked out and he couldn’t take the drug test,” said Whyte.

Perhaps not surprisingly, lawyers for the WBC leading heavyweight contender wanted to chase the money.

“My lawyers wanted to get the 50 grand, but I said no,” said Whyte. “Give the 50 grand to Lucas. He deserved it, he came to the venue, he fought and did well.

“I could have got 50 grand off him but I said no. The man’s a warrior. I’ve got nothing but respect for him but when I’m fighting you I ain’t got no respect for you.”
