Sullivan Barrera says boxing is like sex, plans summer return to the ring

Sullivan Barrera

Cuban light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera 21-2 (14) is back in the gym with a new attitude as he aims to fight the winner of the world title fight between WBO champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev 32-2-1 (28) and Eleider “Storm” Alvarez 23-0 (11).

The Miami, Florida-based 36-year-old has added a sports psychologist to his team after his disappointing twelfth round TKO loss to current WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol 13-0 (11) in March.

“I feel great. I know that was just one bad night. I am not worried about the past and only looking ahead,” Barrera explained.

Barrera wants a warm-up fight in the summer to return to the win column before chasing another world title shot, this time against the Kovalev-Alvarez winner.

“I think the fans know that I always want to fight the best out there. After this fight I want another big fight. My goal is to fight whoever wins between Kovalev and Alvarez,” said Barrera.

In an interesting analogy, Barrera likened boxing to his sex life and said that not everyone can perform to the best of their ability one hundred percent of the time.

“Boxing is like sex. You can be the best lover in the world but sometimes you have an off night. My fiancée knows I am the best even if I don’t perform as well one night. I want to get back in the ring and show the world my best again.”

Barrera shouldn’t feel too down about the loss to Bivol at Madison Square Garden in New York on the undercard of Kovalev versus Igor Mikhalkin last month. The skilful Kyrgyzstan-born 27-year-old destroys most of his opponents in the early rounds, with only three others lasting past the sixth round.
