Flournoy hopes to win Prizefighter
Birkenhead’s Brett Flournoy believes he can cause an upset when he takes part in Prizefighter on Friday.
The 30-year-old welterweight is stepping up to light-middleweight for the tournament at York Hall.
“It’s above my weight so I’m in a no-lose situation,” Flournoy told BBC Radio Merseyside.
“I’m confident I can hold my own. I know I punch hard, I’m solid enough and I’ve got good boxing skills so hopefully I’ll cause an upset.”
Flournoy is a former Army boxer, who racked up an impressive streak of nine wins in a row after leaving the forces in 2006.
However, he has hardly been seen in a boxing ring for the best part of two years and he puts this down to trying to balance his ring career with the need for a steady income away from the sport.
“I took on a local pub and a cafe business because at the beginning of your (boxing) career it’s hard to find a steady income.
“Instead of giving me free time and money in my pocket so I could carry on boxing more, it was just taking all my time up,” added Flournoy.
“In the end it virtually called time on my boxing career altogether.”
The 2005 ABA Champion has since sold the Brown Cow pub in Bebington, Merseyside and is now hoping Prizefighter can reignite his career inside the ropes.
“I know what level I can box at and I know what I can do and as long as I can keep in the gym I should be alright.”
