Ringnews24.com talks with Ricky Boylan

Ringnews24.com: Many fighters have dreams of winning world titles but you have said that winning the British title will be most valuable to you. Why is this?

The British title is just a very different title. I’d love to win a world title, the commonwealth or whichever but I would really like to win the British and anything after that is a bonus.

Ringnews24.com: John Wayne Hibbert stated that he heard that your team wanted to take you in a different direction than have a fight with him. Is there any truth to this or is there another reason why that fight hasn’t happened?

Yeah, that is right. John Wayne Hibbert is a good fighter. It’s a fight that I genuinely wanted myself but my team steered me toward the Southern Area title. I believe it will happen somewhere down the line. I wish John all the best.

Ringnews24.com: Tyler Goodjohn called you out last month. What do you think about that one?

They are all calling me out. That’s another fight that may happen. I hoped that he would beat Tyrone Nurse and I went up there to support him. But these fights that involves me need to have some meaning to them and maybe have some kind of title on the line. There’s no point in a prospect fighting for nothing.

Ringnews24.com: Which fight would you say you have learned the most from so far?

I suppose against Tony Owen. And maybe against Krzysztof Szot which was my last fight.

Ringnews24.com: You perforated your eardrum in your fight with Tony Owen. And you have mentioned that you suffer from stress fractures. How is the healing process?

My ear has completely healed but the whole thing is annoying because it prevents me from sparring and I couldn’t fight. It held me back two or three months due to the lack of sparring. The stress fractures were due to me running. But I started back in the gym two weeks ago and took it  a bit easy just so nothing bad would happen again but I am on my way being fully fit.

Ringnews24.com: Due to your stress injuries do you plan to train any differently than usual so you won’t get injured again?

I am at the minute. I love to run but I am doing less of that at the minute but fingers crossed I can get back into doing that more but it’s best to leave that for a little while.

Ringnews24.com: Has it been difficult to stay focused due to your recent circumstances?

I can’t wait to get back in there, to be honest. I am in the top 15 which is brilliant. I see all the other fighters winning and that motivates me to get back in there and do what I do best and that is winning. I have always had that on my mind. There’s no better promoter for me right now who will get the right fights for me and I am looking forward to it.

Ringnews24.com: A lot of boxing fans have criticised Matchroom for throwing their fighters into the deep end when they have not been ready. What do you think about that and are you worried that you could come up against someone of a higher level a bit too soon?

Not really. The John Wayne Hibbert fight is not something I needed for the Southern area title. So we took another route. I wanted it but my trainer and manager were not happy for me to take it right now. But I am still in the mix. I am still in the top 10 or 15 in Britain so hopefully that British title will come soon.

Ringnews24.com: Unfortunately boxing faced another tragic death when Lance Prayogg passed away soon after his fight on Friday. You wrote a stark reminder on Twitter of how dangerous the sport can be Do you think there is anything else boxing can do to improve it’s safety standards?

Yes, definitely. I give respect to anybody who gets in the ring but you get things happen in the semi pros and a lot of them have not even boxed amateur before. With unlicensed boxing any Joe Bloggs off the street can get into the ring and they should be more strict with the medical side of things. Or even ban it all in all. I am not for unlicenced boxing at all.

Ringnews24.com: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not involved with boxing?

I like running a lot but that resulted in stress fractures from doing too much of that. I like playing football and spending time with my family.

Ringnews24.com: Do you have anything to say to your fans that support you?

I’d like to thank them all for the support. It’s all been a little unreal to me and I am proud. I am looking forward to getting that British title.
